Toronto six-piece Rock Plaza Central is preparing for the second leg of their tour of the US, this time hitting the midwest and west coast. To kick off their tour, and in celebration of their forthcoming album and Paper Bag Records debut, At The Moment Of Our Most Needing, Or If Only They Could Turn Around, They Would Know They Weren't Alone (out this week!), the band is offering a free mp3 download of their take on Van Halen's "Panama."

According to front man Chris Eaton, "...it really all happened as a result of two things. I had an idea to host a night about four years ago where I'd book bands and give them a list of songs they'd have to cover. It was pretty brilliant. And then I had to stop because my partner got a job in Panama for four months. I couldn't get the song out of my head, so one day I just clicked record on the tape recorder and this came out."

With influences ranging from William Faulkner to Palace/Oldham, Tom Waits and Van Morrison, Rock Plaza Central's profile grew quickly after a pair of glowing reviews from Pitchfork, one being an 8.4 stating, "the music is so surefooted and evocative...accessible, supremely affecting, and unique." Shortly thereafter they were on the cover of CMJ and were called "stars-in-waiting" by David Fricke at Rolling Stone. Magnet said, "'[RPC] deftly toed the line between a Dust Bowl-era country/folk road show and more modern, damaged rock brainiacs like Neutral Milk Hotel...the new album reveal[s] some fresh weapons in RPC's arsenal," NPR mentioned, "Rock Plaza Central isn't afraid to get thematically ambitious...," and RCRD LBL said the band, "makes your head spin in a good way."
